Ensures the institution complies with all legal and regulatory requirements. Activities include providing legal counsel/support in areas related to the institution, including corporate law, real estate, tax, business litigation, transactions/antitrust, compliance, intellectual property, employment/labor, institutional governance, ethics, etc. Regulatory activities ensure the organization’s products and business activities are conducted ethically and in compliance with relevant regulations, laws and standards. Audit activities include the examination, verification, evaluation, and reporting on financial, operational, and managerial processes, systems and outcomes to ensure financial and operational integrity and compliance.

Sub Family

Oversees risk management programs and compliance matters at the institution, including developing processes and procedures to identify, assess, and reduce/mitigate risks to the institution; and defining and documenting policies and procedures related to the standards established by the institution that comply with applicable external legislation/regulations, but may also reflect a higher standard than the legally required minimum.

Responsible for work in some/all of the following areas: providing legal advice/counsel in University-related areas; researching, analyzing, and interpreting proposed and existing laws, statutes, and regulations; identifying, monitoring and addressing issues of legal risk; structuring, drafting, negotiating and/or approving legal contracts, letters of agreement, policies and other documents; representing/advocating for the university in litigation, arbitration, mediation or other disputes with courts, government agencies, or other legal authorities.

Provides assistance and support to the institution’s legal department. This includes conducting legal research, drafting and reviewing legal documents, and assisting with the preparation of legal filings and contracts.

Facilitates the transfer of innovative technologies and research findings from the institution to the commercial sector. This involves identifying and evaluating intellectual property, negotiating licensing agreements, and managing the commercialization process. The job also involves building relationships with industry partners, promoting technology transfer opportunities, and providing guidance and support to faculty and researchers in protecting and commercializing their inventions. Additionally, professionals in this role may be involved in marketing and promoting the institution’s technology transfer capabilities, as well as monitoring and managing intellectual property rights.

Conducts research and analysis to identify areas where policies are needed. Activities include: drafting/reviewing and revising existing policies to reflect changes in laws, regulations, and institutional needs. These positions may also be responsible for communicating policies to the campus community, providing guidance and interpretation of policies, and monitoring policy compliance.
