The HR Minute: Interviews
Meet Your HR Team
Jane Banister
Director, Hoya Kids Learning Center

1. What is your job title?
Director, Hoya Kids Learning Center
2. What exactly do you do in your position?
“I lead a vibrant and busy Early Learning Center, serving children ages 18 months to 5 years. I’m fortunate to work alongside a dedicated team that includes six teachers, five assistant teachers, several Georgetown student employees, and an Assistant Director—each of whom plays a vital role in creating a nurturing, high-quality early childhood experience for our children and their families. In addition to overseeing the strategic and day-to-day operations of the center, I also take on responsibilities through an HR lens, including managing two of the University’s Lactation Rooms and serving on the planning committee for the annual Bring Your Child to Work Day.”
3. How do you serve the Georgetown community?
“Hoya Kids Learning Center (HKLC) was established to meet the needs of the children of University faculty, staff, and students, and to help Georgetown University parents better balance work and family responsibilities. The Learning Center is a key component of the University’s commitment to weave family needs into the fabric of the University community and its educational mission.”
4. How long have you been at Georgetown University?
“I have been at Georgetown for just over 25 years”
5. Why did you choose to serve at GU?
“When I was offered the opportunity to work at Georgetown, I was truly honored just to be considered. During my visit and interviews with people from various areas of the campus community, I immediately felt the warmth, care, and sense of purpose that embody Georgetown’s values. I’ll admit, I was initially hesitant to accept the position due to the long commute from Manassas at the time—but something about it just felt right. It has since become my home away from home.
I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of a community where I get to connect with people across the University, all of whom share one of the most challenging and meaningful roles in life: being a parent. My love for working with young children during this uniquely special stage of development is what drives me. Though the work can be challenging, the joy, wonder, and laughter that children bring into my life each day make it all worth it. There’s truly nothing more rewarding than being part of these early, foundational years—and I cherish the opportunity to walk through those doors each morning and be part of their world.”
6. What’s your hometown?
“Salisbury, Maryland is my hometown. I lived there until I went to college. I continue to visit frequently since my—
mother still lives there. (And that is where I can find the best crab cakes!)”
7. Educational Background
Jane has a Bachelor’s degree in Child Development and Family Relations from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Master’s degree in Early Childhood Program Administration from George Washington University at Mount Vernon College.
8. What are three fun facts that the Georgetown community may not know about you?
– “I love thrifting and DIY projects! There’s something so satisfying about giving new life to something old—and it’s a fun, creative way to be kind to the environment, too.”
– “I used to be a skateboarder back in my tweens and teens. I could probably still pull off a 180—and maybe even a 360 if I had something to hold onto!”
– “I have two types of synesthesia—grapheme-color synesthesia and spatial sequence synesthesia. I didn’t realize this was unusual until about 15 years ago, when a casual conversation with one of my student employees revealed that not everyone sees letters in color or visualizes time as a physical space. It was a fun and eye-opening moment!”
