Law Center & Capital Campus

The I-9 process

All new hires and rehires at the Law Center and Georgetown’s Capital Campus (Faculty, Staff and Students) need to complete their Form I-9 on or before their first day of employment with a Human Resources Contact. An employee may be asked to stop working until such time as the I-9 form is completed. A new hire can fill out the Form I-9 at any point after an offer is made and accepted.

  • On your first day of work you will receive an email in your Georgetown University email account with instructions for completing Section 1 of the electronic I-9 Form in the Georgetown Management System (GMS).
  • Appointments to present the required document(s) may be scheduled prior to your first day of work. You can access detailed information about the I-9 process on the Department of HumanResources website. You will then report to the Department of Employment Services (McDonough Hall, Room 583) with the original, unexpired, required document(s) from the “List of Acceptable Documents” to complete Section 2 of your Form I-9. You may contact: LawHR@georgetown.edu to schedule an appointment.
  • Alternatively, you provide a notarized remote I-9 form. Upon completion, you can return the remote I-9 form, a copy of the acceptable document(s) presented, and the Remote Hire Notice Form to the following email address: I_9_Syn.6lo13xj2c60sretf@u.box.com

The I-9 form must be completed within three (3) business days in order to be filed in compliance with federal law.  In accordance with federal law, if you do not present the required document(s) within the three (3) business days of starting work, the University is required to remove you from payroll, and to not permit you to continue working until you have presented the required documents(s).
