Each year on the fourth Thursday of April, National Bring Your Child to Work Day invites children ages 5–17 to step into the world of work, explore exciting career paths, and discover how organizations and communities come together to make an impact.

At Georgetown University, this special day offers families the opportunity to experience the Hilltop through hands-on activities, engaging programs, and a behind-the-scenes look at the many ways our community learns, works, and serves.

The Department of Human Resources is delighted to host a morning filled with exploration, creativity, and Hoya spirit — including:

  • 🎒 Hoya Swag Backpack for each participating child at check-in
  • 📸 Photo Opportunity with Jack the Bulldog 🐶
    (a Hilltop favorite!)

A photo release form must be signed upon registration to participate.

Families must also complete and sign a photo release form as part of the registration process. 👨‍👩‍👧 Parents, you’re in on the adventure too! Put on your detective hat and get ready to solve the mystery! 🔎 In this exciting, hands-on adventure, young sleuths will team up with members of Georgetown University’s Police Department (GUPD) to follow clues, investigate the scene, and uncover the answers during a fun campus scavenger hunt.

🕵️ What’s in store?

  • Campus Clue Scavenger Hunt – Search high and low for hidden clues around campus while learning how detectives observe details, ask questions, and piece together information to solve a case.
  • Meet the Officers of GUPD – Get to know the officers who help keep the Hilltop safe. Learn about their role on campus and the tools they use every day in their work.
  • Patrol Car Experience – Ever wondered what it’s like inside a police vehicle? 🚓 Youth will have the chance to hop into the driver’s seat of a GUPD patrol car and explore the equipment used by campus officers.
  • Junior Detective Badge Ceremony – After completing the hunt and solving the clues, participants will earn their very own Junior GUPD Detective Badge to celebrate their detective skills! 🏅

    Perfect for curious kids who love puzzles, teamwork, and a little adventure, the Detective Track offers an exciting way to explore campus safety while putting observation and problem-solving skills to the test.

Creativity isn’t just about art—it’s about building, designing, storytelling, and problem-solving! On this hands-on, minds-on track, participants will step into Georgetown’s Maker Hub, explore rare and fascinating materials at the Booth Family Center for Special Collections, and take part in a fast-paced scavenger hunt adventure through Lauinger Library.

🛠️ Maker Hub: Where Ideas Come to Life!
The Maker Hub is Georgetown’s hands-on makerspace, where art meets technology. Participants will step into a world of design and fabrication, starting with an exclusive tour to see fabrication robots in action!

Then it’s time to become makers themselves.
Participants will:

  • ✅ Watch advanced fabrication tools and robots that help bring creative ideas to life
  • ✅ Practice their own making skills by creating custom pinback buttons to take home 🎨
  • ✅ Experience the kind of creative problem-solving and design thinking that happens every day in the Maker Hub

After designing their own creations, participants will journey into the past at the Booth Family Center for Special Collections, where they’ll experience rare materials from Georgetown’s historic collections.

Participants will get an up-close look at:

  • ✅ Historic manuscripts, drawings, and sketches capturing creativity across centuries ✍️
  • ✅ A 100-year-old Georgetown student typewriter—try typing like students did long ago!

Enjoy a fast-paced, fun exploration of Lauinger Library with your young Hoya! During this interactive scavenger hunt, participants will visit multiple floors of the library searching for hidden clues and creative surprises.

The Department is dedicated to providing the highest level of education and resources to help athletes maintain peak performance. Your child will hear from the best, and have the chance to ask questions as they immerse themselves in this exciting experience—from door in to door out!

People can play immersive video games, interact with “job” simulators, and create 3-dimensional objects by simply putting on a headset and entering a virtual world. VR provides the ability to experience places you’ve never been—or even places that don’t exist—making it a powerful tool for research, learning, and innovation.

Join staff from the Digital Scholarship and Technology Services Department to discover how students and faculty at Georgetown are utilizing VR technology to enhance their studies. Experience firsthand how VR is transforming education, from simulating complex surgeries to virtually exploring museums across the globe.

In the Innovation Track, participants will step into the exciting world of digital design and explore how artists, engineers, and creators use powerful software to build objects in three dimensions.

Hosted by Georgetown’s Maker Hub and held in Lauinger Library, this one-hour introductory class will introduce young creators to the possibilities of AI-assisted 3D modeling. Participants will explore different tools and approaches used in modern design and see how technology can turn creative ideas into real objects.

This track is perfect for students who enjoy technology, design, gaming, engineering, or simply bringing their ideas to life.

Participants will explore how 3D modeling software works and learn how designers create digital objects using intuitive design tools.

From Digital Model to Real Object
Participants will create their own digital model during the session. After the event, the Maker Hub will 3D print the models, and parents will have the opportunity to return at a later date to pick up their child’s finished creation.

Have you ever wondered how your brain helps you move, learn, and explore the world around you? On the Discovery Track, young scientists will dive into the fascinating world of neuroscience—the study of the brain and nervous system.

Through hands-on experiments and interactive demonstrations, participants will discover how scientists observe the invisible world under a microscope and explore how the brain controls our actions and adapts to new challenges.

This track is perfect for curious kids who enjoy science, experiments, and asking big questions about how the human body works.

🔬 What’s in store?

  • Bugs Under a Microscope – Discover the tiny world that lives all around us! Participants will collect samples from everyday surfaces—like their hands or a doorknob—and prepare microscope slides to observe bacteria up close. Along the way, they’ll learn why handwashing is so important and see other fascinating microscope images, including fluorescent brain cells studied by researchers. Each participant will even take home a photo of their own microscope slide.
  • Writing With Your Feet! – How does the brain control movement? Kids will take part in a fun neuroscience challenge by writing their names twice—first using their hands and then trying the same task using their feet! After comparing the results, we’ll explore how the brain plans actions and how different parts of the brain become active when we perform everyday tasks.

    Participants will also learn about people who are born without hands and use their feet for tasks like writing or using tools. Using real brain images from neuroscience research, we’ll introduce how scientists use brain scans to study how the brain adapts and reorganizes itself.
  • Neuroscience in Action – Discover how Georgetown researchers are studying learning, memory, vision, language, and even brain disorders.
